Area runners can lace up for a great cause – a five-mile run (or one-mile run/walk) benefitting three Bucks County nonprofit organizations serving people with disabilities.

Registration is underway for the 12th annual Run the Gates fundraiser, which will be held June 4 at Forsythia Crossing Park in Levittown. Last year’s event drew more than 250 runners. Organizers expect an even greater turnout this year.

The officially sanctioned Bucks County Roadrunner event provides equal amounts of funding for the Center for Independent Living of Bucks County; Handicapped Crusaders; and Delta Community Supports Inc.

Awards will be given to the overall male and female winners in the five-mile, as well as first, second and third place finishers in various age categories from under 14 through over 70. One-mile race awards are offered for top three male and female.

The Center for Independent Living uses its portion of Run the Gates proceeds to provide scholarships to students at Bucks County Community College. To increase fundraising, the Center is also partnering with Peruzzi Nissan of Falls Township to sell $50 raffle tickets (700 tickets sold maximum) for a chance to win a brand-new Nissan Altima. David Rogers, a Center for Independent Living of Bucks County board member, said proceeds from the car raffle will bring in additional funds to support the expansion of the Center’s programs and services. The Nissan Altima winner will be announced following the June 4 race. The winner does not need to be present to win.

Handicapped Crusaders provides social activities for physically and mentally challenged adults through monthly meetings, participation in crafts and games, guest speakers, as well as other activities.

Delta Community Supports, Inc. provides support to men and women with developmental/intellectual disabilities, as well as children and families in need of foster care and adoptions services.

Registration for the 2017 Run the Gates race is underway. Go to runthegates.org to register. From May 2 until race day registration costs $40 for the five-mile and $30 for the one-mile. The race will be held on June 4, beginning and ending at Forsythia Crossing Park in Middletown Township. Onsite registration and packet pickup will be held from 7:30 a.m. to 9 a.m., with the five-mile run beginning at 9 a.m. The one-mile run run/walk will begin at 9:05 a.m. An awards ceremony will follow at approximately 10 a.m.

Raffle tickets for the Nissan Altima can be purchased by emailing the Center for Independent Living of Bucks County at info@cilbc.org or calling the Bristol-based center at 215-781-5070. Tickets can either be picked up at the Center, 1200 Veteran Hwy # 820, Bristol, PA 19007 or mailed. Online purchases are not available. Ticket quantities are limited and are available on a first come, first served basis.

Peruzzi Nissan and Middletown Township Parks and Recreation sponsor the event. ■
