xRelay 2013-15sThe Fairless Hills chapter of the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life held its annual 24-hour fundraising event on June 22 and 23 at Pennsbury High School’s outdoor track. Relay For Life is a worldwide effort in which communities come together to “Celebrate, Remember, Fight Back”— to celebrate those close to them who are struggling with cancer, to honor the memory of those who have been lost to it, and to raise money to fund research in order, ultimately, to defeat the disease.

xRelay 2013-18sDespite its serious purpose, Relay tends to be an upbeat event and a fun social gathering. Entire families arrive to enjoy the live music, food and games that take place on the sidelines throughout the day, even as walkers on Relay teams continue their laps around the track. Each team is expected to have at least one member walking throughout the 24 hours, from 11am Saturday to 11am Sunday.

Relay For Life events have raised over $4.5 billion since they began in 1985. The Fairless Hills RFL once again drew a large and enthusiastic crowd this year. Attendance figures and fundraising totals have steadily increased, and this year’s effort had raised nearly $134,000 toward cancer research as of July 10. This year’s goal is $145,000 and it is not too late to make a donation; visit the Relay for Life of Fairless Hills page on Facebook.
