You might think that a professional junk removal business would not require much more than a sturdy truck and a crew with strong backs. The owners of locally-based 1-800-Junk Exit would disagree.

“You have to be a people person,” Mike Hodges, Jr. told a Leader reporter. “We want our customers to know that we’ll be respectful of their homes and property, and that the items we haul away will be recycled or donated whenever possible, rather than taken to a landfill.”

Mike’s father, Mike Hodges, Sr., launched 1-800-Junk Exit in 2008. He is also the owner of K.M. Hodges Company, a well-respected Levittown-based asphalt paving business that has been serving local clients since 1975. “We’ve been rooted in this community for 42 years,” he said. “We accomplished that by earning the trust of clients. We bring that same philosophy to 1-800-Junk Exit.”

As a family owned business Mike Sr and his wife Nancy, along with Mike Jr and his wife Heather strive to ensure customer satisfaction and are proud of the testimonials, some of which are posted on the company’s website, www.junkexit.com. The words “prompt, efficient, courteous, honest, professional” come up often in comments from their customers.

“Very often, our customers have some emotional attachment to the so-called junk that we haul away,” said Mike, Jr. “We are always sensitive to that. And many of our customers appreciate the fact that we find a second life for their belongings whenever we can.” A discarded wheelchair, for instance, was donated to a local veteran’s organization; and a full set of baby furniture in good condition was donated to Promise of Grace Ministries, to be used by young, unwed, pregnant women in need.

Transparent pricing is a key feature of Junk Exit’s customer-first philosophy.  “With Junk Exit, you pay only for the actual space your items take up in our truck. It’s a simple pricing formula and the rates are posted on our website. We don’t believe in hidden fees,” said Mike, Sr. He noted that certain items do require, by law, recycling or landfill surcharges. These include air conditioners and refrigerators that contain Freon, TV’s, computers (which may contain mercury), car and truck tires, and extremely heavy items such as concrete, asphalt, bricks, dirt and stone.

Another benefit —a huge one—is that Junk Exit’s pricing includes all the labor. The Junk Exit crew does all the lifting, loading, cleanup and disposal of the unwanted items.

The physical work involved in clearing out a garage, basement or attic can be daunting and time-consuming for most homeowners. “When you hire Junk Exit,” said Mike, Jr. “All you need to do is point and we’ll take care of the rest.” Junk Exit, he noted, will haul away almost anything except chemicals, asbestos or other hazardous materials.

The Junk Exit team will even dismantle and remove swing sets, decks, hot tubs, sheds, swimming pools, fences, patios and other structures; although, there is an additional charge for dismantling such items since this is outside the scope of a standard junk removal project.

Heather Hodges, Mike Jr’s wife and Junk Exit’s office manager, noted that the company is fully insured, an important point for prospective customers. “With Junk Exit,” she said, “you can rest assured that your home and property are fully protected.”

Whether you are moving, clearing out an estate property before a sale, or simply ready for a good spring cleaning, calling Junk Exit is the best, easiest and most economical way to get your junk removal project done. ■
